International handball tournament: Few sports events start as imposing as the international tournament Città della Pace in Rovereto, birthplace of Italian handball. The municipal organising committee succeeds every year in presenting another spectacular and striking tournament for the handball and football youth. It begins with the impressive opening ceremony. Before the enormous Peace Bell tolls one hundred times, the participants take the oath on fair play and the national anthems of all participating countries are played. At the finals the stands are completely filled up. In 2008 the tournament was organized for the sixteenth time, a real classic!

The handball tournament together with the football tournament forms the 'Torneo Città della Pace'. All together more than 150 teams will participate in the football-handball weekend. Many events during the tournament are open for both participants like the opening- and closing ceremony and team leaders reception. On Saturday morning the first part of the opening takes place up in the mountains of Rovereto, where all teams get together around the enormous ‘peace bell’ for the formal opening of the tournament. After this all the buses take their way back down to town, where the parade will take place in the centre of Rovereto. The competition will start at noon. The tournament will continue for a part of Saturday evening and the younger guests who do not have any more games to play, can go to the disco night, which is organised especially for all the participants of Euro-Sportring, in a discotheque nearby in Rovereto, together with the other participating football clubs. A special shuttle takes groups from Rovereto to the discotheque and back. On Sunday late afternoon/early evening the finals will be played in the main sport hall of Rovereto, followed by the prize giving ceremony in the same sports hall. Afterwards everyone is invited to come over to the main football 'Quercia' for a free pasta party offered by the organising committee and to watch a breathtaking firework display to conclude a long weekend of sporting pleasure.

Rovereto is home to 37,000 inhabitants, the second town of the Trentino region, not too far from the Austrian border. The town is situated at only 13 miles east from the Lake Garda and about 15 miles south of the regional capital Trento. Rovereto has many historical monuments, such as the Castle (now a war museum), the town hall on the border of the torrent Leno, the medieval walls and the San Marco church. The centre of the town is situated around the nice Piazza Rosmini with its renaissance palace and consists of many small, old lanes, which give a 'venetian' impression. Here you will also find the pleasant store windows, the taverns and pizzerias.
Riva (15.000 inhabitants, approx. 22 kilometres) is a picturesque, jolly bathing resort, the pearl of the Lake Garda, situated at the most northern part of the lake, between the Rochetta mountain on the western side and the Brione hill in the eastern part. The old town, dominated by the Rochetta, has beautiful medieval buildings with the Torre Apponale and the Palazzo Pretorio, the Rocca Castle and some old gates. The newer part with the most hotels is in the north, direction Arco and on the way along the lake, direction Torbole.
Torbole (3.000 inhabitants, approx. 18 kilometres) is situated in the northern part of the Lake Garda on the banks of the small river Sarca. It is originally a fishing village that the famous German writer Goethe liked very much. It developed into a favourite touristic area, because of its pleasant picturesque position on the lake, its ideal water sports facilities and its many taverns/restaurants.
